The bilingual book includes 75 poems and 24 essays written by the author and artist Huang Anlan during her wanderings in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, and the United States from 2020 to 2022. In essence, it is a book of escape telling the deeply concealed truths of our post-pandemic world. Anlan ingeniously intertwines her inquiries into geopolitics and sensory revolutions into a world of fragmented dolls and pearl-colored butterfly ribbons, which centered around the protagonist "Siming." Beneath the young woman’s pink fluffy skirt are flower gardens, kindness, cliffs, as well as drugs, thunder, and illegally salvaged freshwater pearls. Told in Chinese and English, these restrained and poignant narratives, like the ghosts of butterflies, weave through reality and fiction, romance and politics, intricately depicting the bizarre human affairs against the backdrop of the starry universe.
